Built across 14 islands that are connected by bridges, the beautiful capital city of Stockholm is a focus of most trips to Sweden. Stroll the narrow cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan -- the city's old quarter -- or tour the great 17th-century warship Vasa, which sank just a few minutes into its maiden voyage and was salvaged in 1961. Other Stockholm sights include the Royal Palace, Storkyrkan Cathedral and City Hall, where the Nobel Prize banquets are held.
Travelers may also spend time in Gothenburg, Sweden's second-largest city, and in Uppsala, seat of Scandinavia's oldest university.
