Contiki Holidays, often referred to as Contiki Tours, emphasizes fun and value and specializes in tours for budget-conscious travelers ages 18 to 35. Contiki Tours is a youth-oriented company and was started by a young New Zealander named John Anderson who arrived in Europe in 1961 with no companions and very little money. He acquired a minibus, gathered a group of travelers and spent 12 weeks exploring the continent. The informal tour was a hit, and three years later Anderson founded Contiki Tours. Contiki tours are built with the goal of minimizing transportation concerns and including critical sightseeing. In addition, Contiki maximizes the amount of free time so participants of Contiki tours can customize the Contiki travel experience. Social interaction and adventurous activities are also common with Contiki tours. In fact, tour guides on Contiki Europe tours will even point out popular night spots for you to check out with your newly-made friends. For most Contiki Europe tours, Contiki uses motorcoaches that carry 25 to 50 people. On some Contiki travel itineraries outside of Europe, smaller coaches or four-wheel-drive vehicles are used, carrying about 8 to 20 passengers. Contiki tours are sold in more than 35 countries, and it is not unusual for Contiki tours to have participants of 6 to 15 different nationalities in any Contiki travel group. Contiki tours are especially appealing to singles -- nearly half of Contiki guests are traveling on their own. Contiki Tours will set single travelers up with a roommate of the same sex at no extra cost, thus avoiding the single supplement.
