Navigation along the coast of Greenland.

Day 3 Ilulissat - Disko Bay (Greenland)
At the heart of Disko Bay - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Ilulissat Icefjord provides an extraordinary spectacle of almost surreal beauty. The sculptural icebergs continue their on timeless journey, shimmering with their eternal light. Vast pieces of ice break off from the bergs and rejoin the inexorable movement of the sea. Close by lies the town of Ilulissat, the region’s principal destination. Encircled by icebergs, it has retained a unique mix of traditional Arctic life, with multicoloured wooden houses, huskies and the leather tanners who still work today using the ancient methods of their ancestors.

Day 4 Eqi Glacier / Paul Emile Victor Base (Greenland)

Day 5 Upernavik Fjord (Greenland)

Day 6 Melville Bay (Greenland)

Day 7 Savissivik (Greenland)

Day 8 Thule (Greenland)

Day 9 Pond Inlet (Nunavut Canada)

Placed like a custodian on the northern edge of Baffin Island, Pond Inlet appears to guard over the entrance to the legendary North West Passage. Formerly called Tununiq by the Inuit, this region was long ago inhabited by their ancestors, the Thule, who left behind numerous archaeological artefacts, little vestiges of the past. No matter where you look, your eyes will alight upon a unique landscape of snow-capped mountain ranges, each more beautiful than the last, standing opposite ice-blue glaciers whose vertiginous flows descend into the ocean. In the summertime, when the sun doesn’t set below the horizon, the light is truly magical, a palette of opaline blues, dusky pinks and pure white. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the bird colonies of Bylot Island; LE BOREAL route will sail you close to this uninhabited "Garden of Eden" so that you may wonder at its natural marvels.

Day 10 North Arm Fjord (Canada Nunavut)

Day 11 Clyde River (Canada Nunavut)

Day 12 Isabella Bay (Canada Nunavut)

Day 13 At sea

877-828-4774 877-828-4774 Highlights
  • Set sail for a 14-day 5-star expedition to Baffin Bay. In the company of our experienced guides and naturalists, you will make excursions in Zodiac inflatables to discover unspoiled regions that are located well inside the Arctic Circle.
  • The first destination is the North-West coast of Greenland which will welcome you with its majestic icebergs, colourful villages encircled by mountains and its basalt formations. This is the ideal opportunity for meeting the local population and learning about Greenland Inuit culture. You will marvel at the glacier of Disko Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and you will visit the Paul Emile Victor base which holds artefacts and relics of the French polar expeditions made by this ethnologist. This is also the starting point for a walk up to a panoramic viewing point that overlooks the glacier, and out towards the Greenland polar icecap (Inlandsis), the second largest expanse of ice in the world.
  • The North of Greenland will then reveal its remote villages of peat houses where the last bear hunters and narwhal fishers live in the middle of the Arctic tundra according to their ancestral traditions. You will also see the remains of ancient Inuit civilisations and will discover Savissivik, the largest “iceberg graveyard” in Greenland.
  • The next destination will be the Nunavut in Canada, with its immense cliffs, bird colonies and fjords. You will visit Isabella Bay and its National Wildlife Area which is home to many bowhead whales.  You may be lucky enough to see polar bears, seals, narwhals and even killer whales during your journey. This will also be the occasion to keep an eye on the sky in search of aurora borealis.

Pre-cruise Tour in Kangerlussuaq: Kangerlussuaq - To the Ice Cap
Named "the green country" or Kalaallit Nunaat in Kalaallisut due to its numerous pastures, Greenland is the second largest island in the world. Although it is geographically very close to North America, it belongs to Europe due to its dependence to Danemark. However, it is getting an increasingly wide independence.

Greenland is covered by the world’s second largest ice cap (after Antarctica). Inhabitants are living on the coastal strip of land, which, during winters, is surrounded by pack ice. Only the south west part, approximately up to the capital Nuuk, is free from ice, thanks to the Gulf Stream. The East Coast, which does not benefit from the Gulf Stream has a more severe climate, with shorter melting time. Hence, only 2 villages are inhabited.

The only place in Greenland where it is possible to drive directlly to the Ice Cap is from Kangerlussuaq. It is located at 40 km only.

After flying over a part of the ice cap during your flight to Kangerlussuaq, you will discover it from earth. At the airport, you will get in off-roads trucks. The road was founded by Volkswagen factories in order to get access to the ice cap where they made a test for their cars. The drive is through an amazing landscape and you might be  lucky to see musk oxen or reindeers. Photo stops are made on the way at particularly beautiful and interesting sites.

Naturalist guides will explain about the landscape, the fauna, the flora and the ice, this unique and fragile element forming the largest ice formation in the northern hemisphere.

What's included:

  • The excursion by off-road truck
  • English speaking assistance

Tour duration : around 4 hours. Due to vehicles hard suspensions and the state of the track, we do not advise this tour to persons suffering from back pains. No walk on the ice cap is planned. We recommend to wear walking shoes, take a windbreaker and sun glasses.
