Guatemala VacationsFrom the largest city in Central America, Guatemala City, to the largest Mayan ruins yet discovered, Tikal, Guatemala offers a wealth of sights to be seen. Escorted tours of Guatemala include accommodations, most meals and guided sightseeing. Many itineraries also visit the neighboring countries of Mexico, Belize and Honduras.
In Guatemala City, visit museums or explore Kaminaljuyu, an ancient Mayan city with a mysterious past. The Colonial Spanish capital of Central America, Antigua, was founded in 1543 and offers a rich blend of ancient and Colonial-era architecture set among its colorful streets and cobbled lanes. View palaces, churches and monasteries or visit a crafts cooperative to see textiles being weaved and jade being worked.
Local handicrafts like candles and pottery can be purchased from the hundreds of vendors at the Indian Market in picturesque Chichicastenango. Meet native Guatemalans in the indigenous villages near Lake Atitlán, a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and volcanoes.
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Tikal was once one of the most important Mayan cities. Today, it is a ruin of more than 3,000 limestone temples, palaces and pyramids. You can climb to the top of several structures for a panoramic view over the jungle. Spider monkeys and howler monkeys can sometimes be seen or heard early in the morning.
